Promoting Apprenticeships Between Fiction and Reality

In international comparison, Austria’s vocational education system is often envied – especially the dual system, i.e., apprenticeships. Nevertheless, challenges remain: many companies report difficulties in recruiting apprentices, as they compete with other general or vocational training pathways. At the same time, in many regions – not least in Vienna – there is more demand for apprenticeship positions than there are available spots.

In career guidance and outreach to young people after compulsory schooling, informational and promotional films play a major role. The goal is to broaden knowledge about apprenticeships, set realistic expectations, and improve the overall image of vocational training. How successful is this, and how do the films resonate with their target audience of adolescents?

In the “Films and Discussion” section, we present a series of informational and promotional films about vocational training and apprenticeships. Students and representatives from labor market and education policy, as well as companies that use the medium to recruit apprentices, will speak in two panel discussions. The audience is also invited to join the conversation.
