The discount supermarket as a dark utopia of capitalism and the daily struggle to survive. Customers fight over the cheapest deals, homeless people dive into trash containers for anything of value, and employees struggle with zero-hour contracts. At the center of the film is single mother Eleni, who, as the new store manager, faces constant pressure – from supervisors, colleagues, and even her own mother.
Boldly staged, the film combines stop-motion animation with live-action. Despite its extended runtime, it remains emotionally charged throughout. The characters’ puppet alter-egos are as striking as the authentic performances, which draw viewers directly into their world. Director Ami-Ro Sköld transforms her own experiences as a discount store employee into an immersive, genre-crossing film in which, of all places, a homeless camp offers hope for a new beginning.
