Workers who were invited to Austria under the 1964 recruitment agreement. What was meant to be a brief period abroad became decades of (more or less supported) settling in. In Gurbet, nine people from this first generation of labor migration eloquently recount life on the “cordless swing” between Turkey and Austria. They speak of expectations, dislocations, wounds, and victories, of isolation imposed by both the Austrian majority population and the Turkish consulate, and even the shortage of eggplants in Vienna. Sixteen years later, little needs to be added to the political diagnosis, for example regarding voting rights: “If someone calls you a ‘guest’ for forty years, they must be crazy.” (Joachim Schätz)
