Live: Susi Rogenhofer (aka Sweet Susie) and Manni Montana

Talk withStefan Niederwieser (Ö1) and Susi Rogenhofer on the relationship between work and music

Work and production take place around the clock in a wide variety of locations. But who are the people carrying out this work, and who does the machinery of capitalism need to keep itself running? “United Workers” puts workers – such as cleaning staff – in the spotlight by making them visible and audible. Film sequences and sounds offer insights into different worlds of work and production and become part of an audiovisual production. In contrast to capitalist logic, which views labour primarily as a cost factor, the film sequences show workers with all their human traits. It is not the goods or services that take centre stage here, but the working individual. The project sees itself as an aesthetic practice, which takes a critical look at the consequences of neoliberalism and questions the existing social order. In it, Susi Rogenhofer and Manni Montana explore the sounds of the worlds of work and production, and together with musicians such as Gischt and FM Einheit (formerly of Einstürzende Neubauten), these are translated into sound art and music. The project also takes up the idea of a 21st-century workers’ music.

The project was launched in Austria in 2021 and is investigating working environments in various countries around the world, such as Mexico and Namibia.
