What‘s Work?

What’s labour? What’s employment? And how have they changed over the centuries? Leading scholars from Europe, the US, China and Africa reflect on these and related questions in a six-part documentary by Gérard Mordillat and Bertrand Rothé, which makes for an outstanding podcast.

Power Plant Employment

Movies and documentaries on reactor disasters were trending last year. 10 years since Fukushima and 35 years since Chernobyl rolled the carpet out. For a true insight into the working world of nuclear power plants, however, I do recommend going further back, to Volker Sattel’s „Unter Kontrolle“ (2011).

Erwin and Elvira, the butcher

Fassbinder’s outstanding melodrama „In a Year of 13 Moons“ (1978) is a consistently topical contribution to today’s identity politics debate and a forceful exclamation mark for anti-stereotypical professions.

Superpowers on the job

What to do with superhuman abilities on the job? Superheroes don't give much information on this. A troll in one of the most extraordinary Swedish films of recent years (Border, 2018), on the other hand does.

INFO

Work shapes our lives – and yet it often remains invisible in cinema. The Vienna Labour Film Festival changes that: for one working week, feature and documentary films shed light on the reality of work, careers, and education, examine working conditions, and explore paths for improvement. From supermarket shelves to long-haul trucks, from factory halls to care facilities – the screen becomes a stage for lived experiences and societal reflection.

2026 setzten wir mit dem Schwerpunkt „Frauen.Arbeit.Film“ Akzente – mit einem filmischen Blick auf Arbeitsbedingungen, Rahmenbedingungen der Selbstwirksamkeit in Europa und der Welt.
